Annual Report 2023/24
As we look back on the achievements and milestones of the past year, we are excited to share Te Waiau Mahika Kai Trust's Annual Report for the year 2023/24.
A highlight of our year was winning the Environment Southland Action in Biodiversity and Biosecurity award, a testament to our team's dedication to preserving the region's biodiversity.
We have extended pest control across the site, benefiting our native manu and flora, with increased sightings of native birds and natural regeneration of the ngahere under the mānuka canopy. We also discovered lizards in the valley, a promising sign of our habitat restoration efforts.
Dr Jane Kitson led an important Mahika Kai study and eDNA study in collaboration with Ōraka-Aparima Rūnaka. These studies have provided us with invaluable data on the presence of mahika kai species and have laid the groundwork for future conservation and restoration projects.
Thank you to all our supporters and funders who have supported the Trust over the last year.
